On the device, scan the pre-printed tag in each felled tree and log, carry it from felling to the saw, and replace one that is lost.
What a tag is
A tag is a small pre-printed plastic tag with a number and a barcode. The crew presses one into the cut end of each felled tree (the butt, not the stump) and of each log bucked from it, then scans it with the device. From then on the log is found by its tag: at loading and at the saw, a scan replaces typing its code.
Everything here works without signal.
What the lot asks for
The office decides, for each lot, whether the crew uses tags: the lot setting Tags on felled trees and logs, in the console.
- Off: no tags: the device asks for none. This is the default.
- Optional: the crew may scan a tag: the device offers the scan.
- Required: a felling or a log is not saved without one.
At felling
- Press the tag into the cut end of the felled tree.
- On the felling screen, in Tag in the cut end, tap Scan the tag and point the camera at the barcode. The device beeps and shows Tag ….
- Save the felling as usual. The tag is saved with it, and Undo takes both back.
At bucking
- Log 1 keeps the tag scanned at felling: its line says Tag …, from the felling. Nobody scans it again.
- Press a new tag into the cut end of every other log. Tap Scan tags (… logs left): the camera stays open and asks Scan the tag for log …, one log after another. Scan, wait for the beep, go to the next log. Done stops.
- One log only: tap Scan on its line. A tag scanned onto the wrong log: tap ✕ beside it and scan again.
Where the lot requires tags, Save waits until every log has one: the screen says how many still need theirs.
Add a log later
In a lot whose codes are written In order: 101-2, a tree can be bucked in parts. On the tree's page, tap Add a log to …: the bucking opens with one more log at the end. Type its sizes, scan its tag, and save. It gets the next number; no other code changes.
At loading and at the saw
- On a load: tap Scan tags and scan each log going on the truck. Each one is added with its code, length and diameter. Done stops.
- At the saw: tap Scan a tag under Tree number to open the tree of the log on the saw.
Typing a code works as before.
When a tag will not go on
The device says why, and nothing is added or saved:
- The tag is on no log on this device: check the number, or sync. It may be on a log of a lot this device does not hold.
- This log is on this load already., or the log is on another load.
- The log is in another lot than the one the load is for.
- The tag is on another log already: use another tag.
- The tag was reported lost: use another tag, or type the log's code. A manager can check it.
- The tag is on two logs: two devices scanned it out of signal. Type the log's code instead; a manager settles it in the console.
A lost or unreadable tag
- Open the tree's page. It lists the tree's logs with their length, diameter and tag, and says which are Not loaded yet.
- On the log, tap New tag, press a new tag into the log and scan it.
The old tag is kept as lost in the log's history. If a lost tag turns up and is scanned again, it is never quietly moved: the office sees it under Tags to check in To fix and decides.
For a felled tree not bucked yet, the same works for the tag in its cut end.
When the barcode will not read
On the camera screen, tap Type the number instead. Type the number printed on the tag, exactly as printed, and tap Use this number. Scan instead goes back to the camera.
The camera
The first time, the device asks to use the camera. Allow it: the camera only reads the barcode, and nothing is photographed or kept. If it was refused, turn it on in the device's settings, under Permissions, or type the numbers instead.
