At the saw

On the device at the mill, take a saw, start a tree from the queue, record its boards and their labels, and finish it.

What this is for

At the mill, each tree is sawn into boards on a saw. The device at the saw records which tree is on it, the boards that come off each log, and prints a label for each board. Once the saw is taken, everything works without signal.

Take the saw

  1. On the number pad, tap Saw. The saw opens with your organization's saws.
  2. Tap the saw you work at, then Take this saw. This needs signal.

One device holds a saw at a time. A saw held by another device says Another device has it: an owner or a manager can take it back from there with Take the saw back, giving a reason.

When you leave the saw for good, tap Hand the saw back.

Start a tree

The queue lists the lot's trees: Ready (bucked and at the yard), On the saws and Done. Trees under Shipment record missing were bucked, but some logs are on no truck load; they can be started all the same.

  1. Tap a tree in the queue, or type its number in Tree number.
  2. Check At the saw: the person sawing. The last one on this device is filled in.
  3. Tap Start sawing tree ….

Record boards

  1. From log: tap the log being sawn.
  2. Choose a size from Sizes sawn most, or type the Thickness, Width and Length in whole millimetres.
  3. How many: type the number of boards.
  4. Tap Add …. The boards are saved on the device and their labels go to the print queue.

Each group of boards shows under Boards of this tree, with Print again and Remove. Removed boards keep their numbers: they are not used again.

Recovery shows the boards' volume against the logs'.

The cut plan

Where the organization has the cut planner on, the boards form shows a Cut plan for the log chosen: the way to saw it that is worth the most at today's prices, and the next best to choose from. It shows the log's small end with the pieces on it, and the steps in order: each turn of the log and each size to set.

  • Key the sizes into the saw by hand. The app never sends anything to the saw.
  • Tap a size in the plan to fill the boards form with it, then record the boards as usual.
  • No plan shows until the office has set how the saw cuts and the products' prices. The plan says which is missing.

In the console, an owner turns the planner on and enters the prices, and a manager sets How this saw cuts on each saw's page under Saws. See Settings and preferences.

Finish the tree

Tap Finish tree … when the last board is recorded. If no boards were recorded, or the recovery is outside the range the organization expects, the app asks first: check, then Finish anyway if it is right.

A finished tree can be opened again with Reopen tree ….

Labels

Labels are printed through the device's share sheet, to a printing app for the label printer. Set this under Settings → Label printer. With No printer, the labels wait in the queue: write the codes by hand and print later. See Settings on the device.

When something stops you

  • Taken back by a manager: a manager took the saw. Nothing more is recorded on it from this device until you tap Take it again.
  • Get more board numbers: the saw ran out of board numbers for this log. This needs signal; the other logs can still be sawn meanwhile.
  • A tree Left open when the saw was taken back: tap Go on with tree … on the device that holds the saw now.
