Checks and flags
How a lot's Checks tab finds trees worth a look, what utilization means, and how to set the thresholds.
What this is for
Every lot is checked all the time. A check looks for things worth a look: a missing photo, a log without a measurement, a volume far from the office's estimate, a load that arrived differently. Each finding is a flag on a tree. A flag is a prompt, not an error.
Where to find it
Open a lot and click the Checks tab. Today also lists every active lot with trees to look at.
The tab shows, from the top:
- Trees to look at: the flagged trees, lowest utilization first. Trees without a utilization come last. Use Flag to show one kind only.
- The figures: trees and logs, volumes, pieces without a tag, codes on trucks that no bucking backs, loads received differently, and flags by kind. Click a section to open it.
- How flags are judged: the rules in force, and who changed them and why.
Click a tree to open its page and see what was recorded.
Utilization
Utilization is the volume recorded for a tree as a share of the office's estimate for it. 100% means it came out exactly as estimated.
The lot average is the average utilization of the lot's measured trees. Until enough trees are measured, it is provisional, and no tree is called low.
Two flags use it:
| Flag | Raised when | Often means |
|---|---|---|
| Utilization high | The tree is above a set % of its estimate | A diameter or length typed too large |
| Utilization low | The tree is below a set % of the lot average, once enough trees are measured | A missing log, or a figure typed too small. Or a tree in poor condition: check its tree notes |
Set the thresholds
The defaults:
- High above (% of the estimate): 125
- Low below (% of the lot average): 65
- Measured trees before a tree is called low: 30
For the whole organization (owners):
- Go to Admin → Settings.
- Under What every lot follows, find Utilization flags and click Change.
- Keep Set figures on, and type the three figures. To turn utilization flags off, switch Set figures off.
- Say Why, and click Save.
For one lot (owners and managers):
- Open the lot, then Lot settings.
- Change Utilization flags the same way. The lot now uses its own figures.
- To make the lot follow the organization again, switch Set figures off.
Each setting shows where its value Comes from: This lot, The organization or Default.
Changing a threshold changes the flags at once, also for trees recorded earlier. Flags are always worked out live against today's rules.
All flags
| Flag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Utilization high | The recorded volume is well above the estimate |
| Utilization low | The recorded volume is well below the lot's average |
| Measurement missing | A log has no length or diameter, so its volume cannot be worked out |
| No photo | The felling has no photo, though the lot's rules asked for one |
| Bucked with no felling | The tree was cut into logs, but no felling was recorded |
| Cutter missing | Nobody from the crew is named as the cutter |
| Bucker missing | Nobody from the crew is named as the bucker |
| Saw operator missing | Nobody is named as the saw operator |
| Code on a truck not backed by a bucking | A log code went onto a truck that no bucking in this lot produced: a typo, or a log from elsewhere |
| Load received differently | The yard received the load differently from how it was loaded |
| More untagged pieces shipped than felled | More pieces without a tag went onto trucks than were felled |
| Sawn with no boards | The tree was finished at the saw, but no boards were recorded |
| Bucked after reaching the saw | The tree was cut into logs again after it reached the saw |
| Left open at a saw | The tree was left open when the saw was taken back from its device |
| Deleted past the daily limit | More trees were deleted in the lot that day than the limit allows |
| Recorded while the lot was void | Something was recorded for the tree while its lot was void |
| Recorded around a move to another tree | A device with a slow clock recorded work on a tree whose records had been moved, and the record went with the move. Both trees are flagged. Check which tree the work belongs to |
| Recorded after the tree left the catalog | A corrected tree list retired the tree, and a device recorded it afterwards. The record is kept. Check the list, or move the records to the right tree |
Each flag has an (i) next to it in the console with the same explanation.
What to do with a flag
- Open the tree. Look at the felling, the logs and the photos.
- If a figure was typed wrong, ask the crew to correct it on the device (Correct on the tree's step).
- If a cutter or bucker is missing, fill it in from the console. See Correcting records.
- If the record is right (a hollow tree really is small), leave it. The flag stays as a prompt; it does not block anything.
Tips
- Which evidence a felling must carry (photo, location, who cut it) is set under Evidence for a felling, for the organization or per lot. No photo and Cutter missing follow it.
- Exports include a flags sheet, judged against the rules in force when the file was made. See Exports.
