Create a lot and choose how logs are coded
Make a lot, say how its volumes are measured, and pick how crews write codes on logs.
What this is for
A lot is one area of work with its own list of trees, such as one harvest permit. Every tree, log and truck load belongs to a lot. You create the lot first, then import its trees.
Before you start
- Decide the lot's Code: short, and the way your office already names it, such as
DEMO-1. Crews see it on their devices. - Optional: add a site first, if you want to group lots by place. Go to Admin → Sites, fill in New site (a Name and a Kind: Forest, Yard, Mill or Other), and click Add site.
Steps
- Go to Lots and click New lot.
- Fill in:
- Code: the lot's short code.
- Name: a longer name, for the office.
- Site: the site it belongs to, or No site.
- Measured: over bark or under bark. This says whether this lot's diameters and volumes are measured with the bark on or off. Every volume in the lot is stated that way.
- Under Log labels, choose How log labels are written (see below).
- Optional: type an Example tree number to see a preview of the codes. Nothing is saved from this field.
- Click Create lot.
The lot opens. Its header shows the code, name, status and facts. It has four tabs: Summary, Trees, Loads and Checks.
Next: import its tree list.
How log codes work
When a crew bucks a tree into logs, the device app shows a code for each log. The crew paints or writes it on the log. The code is the tree number, a dash, then the log's place and the number of logs.
You choose one of two ways to write it:
| Choice | Log 2 of 3, tree 101 | Log 2 of 12, tree 101 |
|---|---|---|
| Joined | 101-23 | 101-2/12 |
| Slashed | 101-2/3 | 101-2/12 |
- Joined runs the two numbers together while a tree has fewer than ten logs. From ten logs on, it adds a slash, so
101-112can never mean two things. - Slashed always uses a slash. It is longer, but every code looks the same.
Pick the one your crews and the yard already read. If you are not sure, choose Slashed: it is never ambiguous.
Tips
- The code format cannot be changed after the lot is created. You can see it under the lot's Lot settings (the gear in the lot's header).
- The basis (over bark or under bark) cannot be changed later either. Check it against the office's tree list before you create the lot.
- If a tree is bucked again into a different number of logs, every code of that tree changes. The device shows the new codes. Old marks on the logs are then out of date and should be repainted.
- Created a lot by mistake? An owner can void it: Lot actions → Void lot…. See Correcting records.
- A closed lot accepts no new tree list. Use Lot actions → Close lot when the work is over, and Reopen lot if it is not.
