Buck a tree

On the device, cut a felled tree into logs, type each log's length and diameter, and mark each log with its code.

What this is for

Bucking records the logs a tree was cut into, with their sizes. Each log gets a code, which the crew writes on its end. The codes follow the tree to the truck, the yard and the saw. Bucking works without signal.

Steps

  1. Open the tree on the number pad.
  2. On the tree's page, tap Buck (or Buck this tree in the steps).
  3. Logs: set how many with − and +.
  4. For each log, type the Length, m, then the Diameter, cm in the middle of the log. Next on the keypad moves to the next box.
  5. Bucked by: the last bucker on this device is filled in. Not right? Tap Change.
  6. When: Now, or Earlier for another time. Add a note if something is worth noting.
  7. Tap Save.
  8. Mark the logs: the app shows each log's code large. Write each code on its log, exactly as shown.

The app goes back to the number pad, with Undo for a few seconds.

What the screen shows

  • Measured by names how the lot measures a log's volume. Some lots ask for the Butt, cm and Top, cm diameters instead of the middle.
  • The total shows the logs' volume against the tree list's estimate, and the lot's average. Few trees measured so far make it provisional.
  • If your organization grades logs, each log has a Grade.

A tree without a felling on this device

The felling may have been recorded on another device that has not sent it yet, or on paper. On the tree's page, tap Buck it without a felling on this device. The bucking is recorded all the same.

Tips

  • How the codes look (for example 101-1/3) is the lot's choice, made when the lot is created. See How log codes work.
  • To change a bucking later: on the tree's page, tap Correct on the bucking step. Once the tree is at the saw, the mill corrects it.
  • If you change the number of logs, mark the logs again with the new codes.
  • Left the screen before saving? Your unsaved bucking was kept.
